Nail Polish Increases Birth Defect Risk
The first three months of pregnancy are delicate and potentially dangerous times for the growing baby (embryo and fetus). Poor nutrition or exposure to dangerous chemicals from smoking, alcohol, or environmental poisons can abort the pregnancy or cause permanent damage.
Scientists from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) said that women of childbearing age should avoid using nail polish containing dibutyl phthalate (DBP) because it causes birth defects in laboratory animals.
DBP makes nails more flexible and helps lotions penetrate the skin. Unfortunately, it isn’t always listed on the label. A study by Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention found that breakdown products of DBP were found in the blood of most women of childbearing age.
An EWG spokesperson said that the women were probably exposed to the chemical through nail polish and other cosmetics. The group recommended that women should avoid all exposures to DBP when they’re considering becoming pregnant and during pregnancy and nursing.
Two major cosmetics manufacture- Proctor and Gamble and Estée Lauder- have eliminated DBP from their products. During pregnancy, your body is like chemical manufacturing plant for your new baby. Use only the finest and purest ingredients (good, healthy foods) when making your baby and minimize exposure to dangerous chemical, such as alcohol, tobacco, second hand smoke, and poisons in the environment.
